What is the Evaluation Process?Evaluations are typically divided into three separate appointments: Initial Consultation/Parent Intake – This meeting is usually an hour, and it can be done in-person or via telehealth (virtual). Intake paperwork is sent to you prior to this first appointment. One of the forms you will complete is a developmental history form, which will be reviewed and discussed in this first meeting. In this meeting, Dr. Brown will get additional developmental and background information about your family/your child. You will have a chance to share your concerns and ask additional questions. Dr. Brown will also discuss what to expect on testing day and how to prepare yourself/your child. Direct Testing – This appointment is when Dr. Brown will spend time with your child and conduct the evaluation. You will have an idea of what to expect and how long the testing will be at the end of your first intake appointment. The length of this appointment depends on your concerns, the age of the person being evaluated, and what information you are seeking. Direct testing may be broken up into 2 appointments depending on the schedule and needs of the individual. Feedback/Results – The meeting is usually an hour, and it can also be done in-person or virtually via telehealth. At this meeting, you will get a copy of the evaluation report. Payment for the full cost of the evaluation is required before your results are reviewed or receiving a copy of the evaluation report.

Can I choose to get an evaluation through my child’s school?Yes. Evaluations that can be offered through a public school are free. These evaluations are specifically used to determine if your child meets educational eligibility. This is different from a medical diagnosis. The process for an evaluation in the school includes a timeline of 45 school days (approximately 9 school weeks) from the time you sign consent to complete the evaluation. Schools then have 30 calendar days to meet for an ARD meeting, which is when you will review the results of the evaluation and determine if your child would benefit from accommodations and/or modifications in the school setting.
-
What is the benefit of choosing a private evaluation instead of a school evaluation?Private evaluations offer a more comprehensive evaluation, considering a child's performance across various contexts beyond just the school environment. This proves invaluable when seeking services beyond school, like therapy, interventions, or, in some instances, medication. It also aids in offering support within the home environment. Dr. Brown is a Licensed Psychologist and a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. This allows her to offer both the medical diagnosis and educational eligibility. With her experience working in school environments, she possesses a deep understanding of educational rights and can assist in navigating them for your child if necessary.
